A web widening apparatus transversely wafting a web, such as a split web, consisting of a film stretched longitudinally in a single axis, includes wedging means arranged in the traveling path of the web widening the web transversely . The widening means is constituted by a curved rod-shaped member and a protruding portion which is generally arranged around the axis of the curved rod-shaped member. The rod-shaped member curved in the web traveling direction is arranged so that the concave side faces forward and the convex side faces backward, and the protrusion is rotatable around the axis of the rod-shaped member curved at a speed higher than the traveling speed of the web . In one aspect, a curved rod member is comprised of a curved shaft and an outer tube rotatable relative to the curved shaft arranged around the curved shaft, the protrusion being formed between the grooves cut on the outer tube . In another aspect, the protrusion is formed of a spring arranged around the curved rod-shaped member.
