A spread spectrum communication apparatus comprises at least one surface acoustic wave matched filter (1), a plurality of surface acoustic wave delay lines (2, 4) having different delay amounts, and integrating circuits (3, 5) for integrating an output signal of the surface acoustic wave matched filter and the respective output signals of the plurality of surface acoustic wave delay lines. This arrangement facilitates QPSIC operation. Both delay lines may be formed on the same substrate. Also disclosed are hermetic sealing of the substrates containing the SAW devices (Fig. 17), overlapping of the matched filter electrodes (Fig. 16), the use of common ground terminals for input and output electrodes, and the use of single- and double- electrode structures (Figs. 19, 21).
