PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new Bacillus natto producing a system comprising poly γ-glutamic acid containing L-glutamic acid in a large amount by belonging to Bacillus subtilis and lacking a glutamate recemase. ;SOLUTION: This Bacillus natto belongs to Bacillus subtilis, lacks a glutamate racemase, and produces poly-γ-glutamic acid wherein ≥70% of the consisting units is L-glutamic acid. The new Bacillus natto is deposited as FERM P-16147, and is obtained by subjecting a wild strain belonging to Bacillus subtilis to a mutation treatment, selecting bacteria capable of growing in a perfect culture medium but not growing in a minimal culture medium from the mutated bacteria, and further selecting a bacterium capable of growing in a minimal culture medium containing glutamic acid from the selected bacteria.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
