PURPOSE: To provide a method and device for producing a glass preform for an optical fiber. ;CONSTITUTION: A porous glass preform is produced by producing and depositing glass fine particles in a reaction chamber 1. In this process, the velocity of discharged gas in a duct 8 where glass particles not deposited are discharged from the reaction chamber 1 is specified at ≥15m/sec. More preferably, air in the outside of the reaction chamber 1 is introduced to the duct 8 where glass fine particles not deposited are discharged from the reaction chamber 1 so that the pressure fluctuation in the reaction chamber 1 is reduced. By this method, chalking of the duct 8 due to glass fine particles can be prevented and the inner pressure of the reaction chamber 1 can be stably maintained for a long time.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO&Japio
