The surface of the substrate is coated with a wear-resistant photocatalytic coating of a semiconductor photocatalyst. When light having a wavelength higher than that of the photocatalyst band gap energy is irradiated, water is chemically adsorbed in the form of a hydroxyl group (OH - ), and the surface of the photocatalytic coating exhibits a high degree of hydrophilicity. In an application of the present invention, the surfaces of mirrors, lenses or windowpanes are coated with a photocatalytic coating to exhibit a high degree of anti-fogging. As another example, a material coated by a photocatalytic coating is placed outdoors and the highly hydrophilic surface is self-cleansed by rain. As another example, if the article covered by the photocatalytic coating is immersed in water, rinsed with water, or wetted with water, oil contamination is released and can be easily cleaned without using a detergent.
