The surface of the substrate is coated with a wear-resistant photocatalytic coating which is a semiconductor photocatalyst. When light having a wavelength higher than the band gap energy of the photocatalyst is irradiated, water is chemically adsorbed on the surface in the form of a hydroxyl group (OH - ), and the surface of the photocatalytic coating exhibits a high degree of hydrophilicity. In some embodiments, the surface of the mirror, lens, or windowpane is covered with a photocatalytic coating to exhibit a high level of anti-fogging properties. In another embodiment, the article coated by the photocatalytic coating is placed outdoors, and the highly hydrophilic surface is self-cleansing by rain. In another embodiment, when the article covered by the photocatalytic coating is immersed in water, washed with water, or wetted with water, oil dirt is released and easily cleaned without the use of a detergent.
