Method and apparatus for treating metal melts

The method concerns treatment of metal (in particular, steel) melts in a metallurgical vessel which has a tapping hole and is rotatable about its vertical axis. At least two electrodes extend into the interior of the vessel. The method includes the following steps: (a) at the beginning of the melting process the vessel is rotated so that the melt from previous meltings covers the vessel wall; (b) next the charge (in particular, scrap material) is introduced into the vessel whose rotational speed is adjusted so that the solids move directly in front of the wall; (c) during melting the speed of the vessel is increased so that the material to be melted and already molten is held at a distance from the central tapping hole; (d) the speed is slightly reduced for slag removal; (e) for tapping the speed is reduced as quickly as possible, leaving a metal sump in the vessel when its speed is reduced to zero. Also claimed is an apparatus for implementation of the method.
