Improving the cold-start behaviour of automobile catalysts

In a procedure for improving the cold-start behaviour of fully active and aged automobile catalysts, a mixture of air and an auxiliary fuel is passed over the cold or locally, electrically preheated catalyst immediately before the engine is started. The auxiliary fuel is catalytically burned on the active part of the catalyst, and the temperature of the catalyst locally rises to 100 - 250 deg C before the engine exhaust gas reaches it. The supply of air and auxiliary fuel is maintained until a satisfactory conversion of the exhaust gas pollutants is assured by the flow of hot engine exhaust gas.
