PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a cost by preventing a decrease of a performance by reducing a used amount of an activated alumina adsorbent by a method wherein in order to remove practically all carbon dioxide and steam from the activated alumina of an adsorption zone by interrupting periodically an adsorption process, the actimted alumina is sufficiently heated to execute treatment by regeneration of heat. SOLUTION: When an adsorption front in a layer 22 advances in a direction of an outlet end of a container A to reach a specific position following an advance of a pressure swing adsorption(PSA) process, a container B of adsorbent regeneration completion is put in an adsorption process to start a regenerating process of an activated alumina in the container A, and thus a PSA cycle is continuously recycled. When the adsorbent in the container A is required to be regenerated, valves 16 and 52 are opened to start a heater 54, a heated purge gas is made to flow through lines 48, 50 and 30 to pass through the container A in a counterflow state, carbon dioxide and steam which remain in the activated alumina are desorbed, and discharged from a system via lines 10 and 20. The adsorbent can be regenerated, and effective operation of the system can be achieved.
