In the preparation of 4-20C alpha , omega -alkenols (I) by catalytic monodehydration of the corresponding alkanediols (II) at 300-500 degrees C, an aluminium (Al) phosphate/barium (Ba) phosphate mixed catalyst is used. Preferably the molar ratio of the Al phosphate/Ba phosphate system is 1:10 to 10:1, especially 1:5 to 5:1. The catalyst is calcined at 400-600 degrees C. Water is added to the educt stream.
