Production of titanium dioxide (TiO2) fibers with a catalyst component comprises: (i) adding water to a solution of a titanium alkoxide to cause hydrolysis and polymerization and give a polymer in the reaction mixture; (ii) dissolving the polymer in the presence of an organic solvent, giving a spinning solution; (iii) adding a catalyst component to the titanium alkoxide solution or the reaction mixture and/or to the spinning solution; (iv) spinning the solution; (v) treating the precursor fibers with water vapor before and/or during calcination; and (vi) calcining the precursor fibers. An Independent claim is also included for titanium dioxide fibers containing a catalyst component produced in this way.
