The filter element essentially comprises a filter web pleated roughly in a zigzag shape with formation of strip-like adjacent pockets and pleats, the pockets and pleats running with essentially constant cross-section up to the edge of the filter web. At the edge of the filter web is arranged an encirclement which runs at least in regions at an angle to the pockets and pleats, so that the filter web and its encirclement can have, in plan view, a shape markedly deviating from simple geometric shapes - e.g. a rectangle.
