The Cyclic Stabilization Test procedure in SAE ARP4205 was used to study the performance of 5μm and 15μm Absolute rated aircraft hydraulic filter elements as a function of vibration, contaminant particle size distribution/type, and temperature. Flow cycling had a significant effect on filter element performance, resulting in a reduction in filtration efficiencies compared to the traditional multi-pass filter performance under steady state flow conditions. The effect of vibration on filtration efficiencies was small, although the stabilized fluid cleanliness levels deteriorated by several AS4059 Classes on introduction of vibration. The effect of contaminant particle size distribution/type on filtration efficiencies and dirt capacity was significant with filtration efficiencies and dirt capacities increasing with coarser contaminant size distributions. Temperature had a significant effect on dirt capacity, as expected, but only a negligible impact on filtration efficiencies. Overall, the results show that SAE ARP4205 provides an effective test method for evaluating the performance of aircraft hydraulic filter elements in terms of repeatability and performance discrimination.
