An apparatus (2) projects an image of an object (4) onto the object (4). The projected object image overlays the object (4) such that an observer (6) of the enhanced object (4) senses that the bright features are brighter and the dark features remain the same. The apparatus (2) has a light source (8) which illuminates the object (4), a video imaging means (10), which creates a video signal representative of the object (4) image, and a video projector (12) which receives the video signal from the video imaging means (10) and projects a visual image of the object (4). A filter (30) prevents video projector (12) light from reaching the video imaging means (10), thereby eliminating positive feedback.
