This invention is a load cell made from one flat piece of metal consisting of three structural elements: (a) a flat flexure beam (1) possibly with a narrow mid-section, on which strain sensors are bonded; (b) a flat U-shape loading element (2) attached at its inner mid-section to one end of the flexure beam, with the two leading edges of the U-shaped loading elements reaching beyond the mid-point of the middle beam; and (c) a flat mounting element (3) attached at its mid-section (4) to the other end of the flexure beam. The mounting element can also be U-shaped (13). This configuration makes it possible to load the U-shaped loading elements into a symmetrical S-shape (12) with stresses of equal and opposite sign at points equi-distant from its mid-point along its main axis. Low-profile scales incorporating a plurality of such load cells are described.
