An intermediate bottle storage unit (8) is located at the transfer area (6) to divert bottles (2) away from the track to the next processing stage including the filling machine (4) when the latter is unable to accommodate further bottles at any given time. Diverted bottles are stored until the next stage is ready to receive them.
