Process for reducing the inorganics content in fossil fuels, especially brown coal, comprises subjecting the coal to acid gas, e.g. CO2, where the gas pressure is selected so that the coal absorbs an amount of gas required to produce the desired demineralization effect and reacts with it, and mechanically/thermally dewatering the conditioned coal so that the inorganics converted into soluble form are removed from the coal. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for carrying out the reducing process comprising a sealed gas-tight vessel held under a specified pressure.
