The gearbox has a speed changing mechanism (4a-4c,5) that can vary a speed change characteristic with n gears, an actuating mechanism with n operating paths that varies the speed change characteristic in the changing mechanism in one of the n gears via one of the n operating paths; a control element mechanism (11a-11c) for driving the actuating mechanism; and incremental change control part (7); a step change control part (13); and an electronic control unit (9). The control unit controls the control element mechanism depending on operation of the incremental or step-change control parts. The control element drives the actuating mechanism via one of the n operating paths to alter the speed changing mechanism either gear for gear or by at least two gears. An Independent claim is also included for a method of varying a speed change characteristic.
