PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor memory device for improving the data processing speed and data input/output efficiency and a method for controlling the read/write operation thereof.;SOLUTION: A data FIFO 23 sequentially stores the write data when a read instruction is input during the write operation and continues the write operation by sequentially outputting the data to a memory cell array 21 after the end of read operation. In this case, the address FIFO 25 sequentially stores the address of write data and then outputs the address to the memory cell array 21 after the end of read operation. A control signal generator generates a plurality of control signals to control the data FIFO 23 and address FIFO 25. When the address during the read operation is matched with the stored address of address FIFO, the data of memory cell array is not outputted and the stored write data of the data FIFO is outputted. The number of data stored in the data FIFO and the number of addresses stored in the address FIFO may be varied depending on the CAS waiting time of the semiconductor memory device.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
