The location device has a fixing plate adapted for use with a number of different types of rucksack, a plug-in connection incorporating a spring and a manually-operated release cable. A visual location aid is provided by an air-filled balloon incorporating an auxiliary acoustic device, e.g. a siren, providing an alarm signal upon operation of the release cable. The cable between the fixing plate and the balloon is marked in meters, to allow the depth of the buried casualty to be calculated.
