The side impact protection device is integrated in the backrest (47) of the passenger seat and uses a pressurized gas source (16) for inflation of a thorax protection airbag (14) and a head protection airbag (12) deployed to one side of the seat backrest. The head protection airbag is unfolded upwards during its deployment, with the 2 airbags being independent of one another or coupled together via flow openings (52).
