(+)-Proto-quercitol, (-)-proto-quercitol or (±)-proto-quercitol represented by the following formula (I-1): or L-epi-2-inosose, D-epi-2-inosose or DL-epi-2-inosose represented by the formula (I-2), have an activity of inhibiting the proliferation of HIV infecting human T cells and/or human monocytes/macrophages and/or other human hemocytes and, therefore, are useful as HIV proliferation inhibitors. Also, a method of inhibiting the proliferation of HIV by treating HIV with the compounds of the formula (I-1), the compounds of the formula (I-2) or enantiomers or racemates thereof is provided.
