The present invention relates to the use of oligonucleotides to inhibit the proliferation of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Preferred HIV target sites have been identified, and oligonucleotides are described that are designed to hybridize to or analogous to the target site. A preferred use of oligonucleotides is to inhibit HIV proliferation in HIV-infected patients.
