PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for power based dynamic channel allocation for receiver dynamic range mitigation are provided to properly receive a multiplex carrier signal with a relatively high dynamic range. CONSTITUTION: A receiver(632) consists of filters(606,608,610) and each filter corresponding to one frequency band is used to receive a communication signal. A controller(624) coupled to the receiver determines the amplitude of the received signals. The controller is also coupled to a call processing module(628). The controller also determines whether the received signal is in the proper frequency band; that is whether the amplitude of the received signal is within the assigned dynamic range of the frequency band within which the signal is transmitted. When the signal is not in the proper frequency band, the controller in conjunction with the call processing module transmits a message to the equipment that transmitted the received signal instructing the equipment as to which frequency band to transmit the signal.
