A vehicle tyre (1) includes reinforcing cords (3,5,6) and different rubber components, e.g. bead filler strips (4), tread strips and carcass sidewalls (9). For tailoring the tyre to meet different demands of the tyre at low and high speeds at least one of the rubber components contains a magnetic rheological fluid whose stiffness can be varied in a magnetic field. In a process for manufacturing the tyre the magnetic rheological fluid is introduced into the rubber compound during extrusion by injecting through small channels before the nozzle outlet. A process for handling and building in a tyre component already filled with the fluid is claimed in which the fluid is prevented from running out of vulnerable points, e.g. cutting points, by subjecting the fluid to a magnetic field to create a stiffening effect. In a claimed method for increasing steering accuracy of the tyre at high speed without loss of ride comfort at lower speeds one or both bead filler strips(4) contain the fluid and at high speed a stronger magnetic field is built up than at low speed and the magnetic field lines at high speed are in a plane perpendicular to the hollow chambers containing the fluid. In a variation of this method the sidewalls(9) contain the fluid. In a further method for increasing steering accuracy and/or reducing tyre undulations at high speeds an additional magnetic field is set up by a fixed magnet close to a tyre component(4,7,9) containing the fluid and stiffens the component when it passes the magnet. Also claimed is a method for suppressing bending in the tyre tread without reducing comfort at low speeds in which the fluid is contained in the sidewalls(9) and/or in elastomer profiles at the edges of the breaker layers(6) and/or in a band(7) radially outside the breakers and/or in the tread and a stronger magnetic field is built up in the components(7,9) or elastomer profiles at high speed than at low speed.
