An assembly of tire components already positioned on a building drum(T1-Tn) is determined(4) with a weighing system(2). After each further component is added to the tire the construction is weighed(5) again. The weight of the additional component is determined(9) by the difference between the two measurements. If a set weight for the additional tire component is not exceeded the process is allowed to continue. When the additional component weight is outside set limits the tire is rejected. The weighing system(2) is a strain gauge mounted on the shaft of the tire building drum. Alternatively the strain gauge may be located in the base at each processing station of the moving drum. Tire contor measurements(10) are made on the tire after laying on each new tire component. Contor measurement equipment(8) may move with the drum. Contors can be observed via a scanner and measurements made using automatic image processing. An independent claim is included for a vehicle tire produced using the claimed process.
