As engine starts, the electric magnet (11) smoothly releases the locking element in stages. Activation requires brief alternation of high and low current over a defined period or interval so as to pulsate the valve (10) piston about its center position and ensure rapid pressure alternation between chambers (A) and (B) at a pressure calculated to keep the valve piston in center position. After a set time or interval, high current load is maintained a set time for the microprocessor (12) to check the camshaft component has turned out of its basic setting so the locking element (13) has adopted its release setting. If the camshaft component fails to turn, the stages are repeated until the microprocessor records a camshaft turn. Current is now applied in excess of the valve piston center setting requirement so as to regulate the turn angle of the component (5) relative the component (4).
