A desired characteristic of the clutch torque as a function of time is determined based on selected operational parameters, e.g. Identification of a gear change, driving situation, type of driver or gear change situations. Based on the same parameters the duration of the period in which the torque reduction can be established. Finally a characteristic for the engine torque corresponding to that for the clutch is established and the two characteristics matched
