To lay the fixed rails (44,46) of a permanent way at a bridge, and especially a concrete bridge structure, an intermediate concrete slab (26) is laid with successive recessed zones (30) along the rail line with, if required, lateral joints between the concrete intermediate plate segments at the recessed zones (30). A concrete rail grid carrier slab (32) is laid over the intermediate slab (26). An initial set of molding shells is placed in position at least at the recessed zone (30) and a joint in the intermediate slab (26), and the concrete is poured to cast the slab (26). The molding shell structure is removed before the concrete has hardened at the intermediate slab (26).
