A thermionic, flat emitter has an emission surface formed mainly by spiral- or meander-shaped conductor paths (15) which are carried by emitter arms (9) forming current leads. The emission surface, in the focus zone, has an opening (16) for an ion entrance. Beneath the opening (16) is located a body (11) having a comparatively large mass and high melting point, the body specifically being designed in the form of a disc which is fixed on the emitter arms (9). The flat emitter is built into a rotary tube (2) which is specifically equipped with an electromagnetic system (60 for generating a quadrupole field.
