Continuous regeneration of deactivated catalyst particles by passing the particles successively downwards through a first coke combustion zone (CC1), a second coke combustion zone (CC2), an oxychlorination zone and a calcination zone comprises: (i) contacting the particles in CC1 with dry air, inert gas and regeneration gas from CC2; and (ii) recycling the regeneration gas from CC1 to CC2 via a recovery system.
