PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely measure the orientation at a low cost by emitting white light to a fiber to make an interference color revealed, and analyzing the interference fringe generated by performing a continuous compensation by a rotary polarizing plate to determine the double refractive index. ;SOLUTION: The periphery of a fiber is filled with a liquid having a refractive index substantially equal to the thickness directional refractive index of the fiber, and white light is emitted to a synthetic fiber filament F by a light source mechanism 2. A plurality of wavelength plates having different optical path compensation values is used to compensate the optical path difference of the fiber. When the interference color is observed by an observation mechanism 3, and the optical path compensation value of the wavelength plate is increased, the interference color gradually transfers to the lower-order side. The image of the revealed interference fringe is analyzed by an image processing device 36, whereby a double refractive index is determined from the expression ΔN=nλ/SQR(D2-W2). According to this, with respect to a general circular sectional fiber, the orientation can be measured only by the regulation by the wavelength plate.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
