PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetoptical substance which is applicable to a broad wavelength band and an optical isolator with this magnetoptical substance.;SOLUTION: A magnetic substance thin film 307 of the magnetoptical substance 300 has a level difference element 350. The thickness of the film of the first part 307a of the magnetic substance thin film is defined as D1 (optical wavelength λ1=1.52 μm), the thickness of the film of the second part 307b of the magnetic substance thin film is defined as D2 (optical wavelength λ2=1.60 μm) [D2D1]. The magnetoptical substance 300 keeps a high light-transmission factor in a range of 1.52 μm to 1.60 μm due to the magnetic substance thin film 307 having two kinds of thickness. That is, a light-transmission characteristic having a broad wavelength band can be obtained.
