PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple mounting structure through which the high accuracy mounting position of an optical fiber to a semiconductor optical device is realized. ;SOLUTION: In a semiconductor laser 1 as a semiconductor optical device, a ridge 4 for mounting is formed by making use of an active layer 3 as the center. A ridge 4 for mounting is formed by a selective crystal growth method, and it has a structure in which its side faces are formed of a (111) plane at about 55°. An ordinary V-groove 5, which is used to fix an optical fiber is formed on an Si motherboard on the other side.
