The present invention provides compounds and methods of treating cardiovascular diseases. More specifically, the present invention relates to the modification of thrombus formation through the administration of an agent that, among others, is capable of (1) deactivating thrombin in the fluid phase and the thrombin that is attached, either to a fibrin in a clot or any other surface, through antithrombin catalysis; and (2) inhibit the generation of thrombin through catalysis of the deactivation of factor Xa by antithrombin III (ATIII). The compositions and methods of the present invention are particularly useful for the prevention of thrombosis in the circuit of heart bypass devices and in patients undergoing renal dialysis, as well as for the treatment of patients suffering or at risk of suffering related cardiovascular conditions with thrombi, such as unstable angina, acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), cerebrovascular accidents (stroke), pulmonary embolism, deep venous thrombosis, arterial thrombosis, etc.
