The present invention is a method for the prevention and therapeutic treatment of diabetic retinopathy. The method includes the administration of an inhibitor of formulas I, II and III aminotransferases, dependent on branched-chain amino acids (BCAT) to animals, such as mammals, in particular humans, in an amount sufficient to treat the retina in diabetic retinopathy prophylactically or therapeutically. The present invention also provides several new BCAT inhibitors of formula IV. In formulas I-IV, n, m, X and R-R have the meanings given in the description.
