Logs are supported on two or more benches (1, 5), at least two of the benches (1) being movable in the vertical direction, with the vertical movement of these benches being synchronised, so that the logs can be lifted and lowered whilst in a substantially horizontal position. A bench (5) is also fixed to a column (9) acting as a support for the logs in the lateral direction. The vertically movable bench structure is connected to the column via an articulated joint mechanism (1d).
