The invention relates to single-stranded nucleotide fragments belonging to conserved or variable regions of the 16S ribosomal RNA of bacteria of the genus Rickettsia. These fragments are capable of hybridizing under predetermined conditions to the DNr or the rRNA of at least one bacterium of the genus Rickettsia and not to the rDNA or the RNr of non Rickettsia. The invention further relates to the probes, the primers whose sequences belong to those of the fragments of the invention, as well as a reagent and a method for dentifying the genus Rickettsia, or a species of the genus Rickettsia.
