The invention relates to the use of heart-specific transcription factors of the basic helix-loop-helix type for treating cardiac power failure. Areas of application for the invention are the medical and pharmaceutical industries. The aim of the invention is to develop an agent that restores the contractility of the heart and inhibits the apoptosis of the cardiomyocytes. The inventive agent for treating cardiac power failure is characterised in that it contains constructs, which are suitable for the transfection of the heart, using transcription factors of the basic helix-loop-helix type. Preferred transcription factors are eHAND or dHAND.
