A method for converting HTML/XML to HDML/WML in real time for display on wireless communication devices. The request for Web content comes from the mobile unit and is received by a proxy server (220). The proxy server retrieves the content from the Web or from local cache (222). The proxy server paryses the mobile unit request to determine the mobile device type and the mobile user preferences. The specifications for the device type (226) and user preferences (224) are retrieved by the proxy server from its database. Based on the device and user information, the proxy server retrieves a conversion specification tailored to the device and the user (228). The retrieved Web content is then processed by the proxy server based on the conversion specification. The result of this processing is then optimized for transmission and sent to the waiting wireless communications devices (234).
