The memory has a self-refreshing control (30) with an internal clock source (32). A control signal is provided by the clock source for refreshing the data held in a number of memory cells at given time intervals. An initialisation circuit (20) activates the self-refreshing control in response to an external current supply voltage being initially delivered to the semiconductor memory. The self-refreshing control may be de-activated by the initialisation circuit upon detection of a blind cycle mode.
