The staircase has a vertical carrier element (1) extending between the floor and the ceiling, fitted with tread carriers (2) for supporting respective tread surfaces (4), e.g. via telescopic carrier arms (3). Each of the tread carriers is fitted to the carrier element to allow its relative rotation and is secured in a different angular position.
