The outside rear view mirror has a mirror head pivotable on a bracket to occupy a first level relative to it, and by interaction of locking elements lifted to a second level. The mirror head and bracket are tensioned one to the other by a spring element, the spring force of which opposes the lifting movement. The spring element in the adjusting position between a first and second level has a non-linear spring characteristic (18) and is such that the spring force applied by the spring element decreases by a small amount at at least one point.
