The mirror element has an interior rear view mirror (1) extending in a passenger compartment in a direction of a head portion of a front seat passenger, in a usage position. An actuating device cooperates with a holder (2) e.g. sprocket chain, for releasing a spring restoring force, and effects transfer of the mirror into the usage position. A detachable snap-on unit locks the mirror in a non-usage position at an element selected from a group of a spring element, the mirror and the holder. The spring element provides a spring force.
