PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the hardness of the steel and to make excellent its wear resistance and toughness by allowing it to have a specified compsn., and controlling the total area ratio of one or two kinds of M6C carbide and M2C carbide after quenching and tempering and the maximum particle size of MC carbide to specified ranges. ;SOLUTION: This high wears resistance and low alloy high speed tool steel has a compsn. composed of, by weight, 0.9 to 1.05% C, 0.1 to 0.5% Si, 0.1 to 0.5% Mn, 3.5 to 5.0% Cr, 4.0 to 6.0% Mo, 1.0 to 2.5% W, 0.8 to 1.5% V, 0.01 to 0.02% N, ≤0.01% Ti+Nb+Ta, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, and in which C-Ceq=ΔC is controlled to 0.07 to 0.17, where Ceq=0.24+0.033W +0.063Mo+0.2V. Also, preferably, after quenching and tempering, the area ratio of the total of one or two kinds of M6C carbide and M2C carbide is controlled to 3 to 6%, and the maximum particle size of MC carbide is controlled to the range of 3 to 7 μm, by which its wear resistance and toughness can be improved.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
