PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control an engine accurately for a target operating state by using a motor-generator in an engine assisting operation and a power generating operation via the simplest possible structure in a hybrid construction machine. SOLUTION: A controller 9 computes a fuel injection quantity Qr corresponding to the optimal torque at a set speed N0 as a target fuel injection quantity, and operates the motor-generator 6 as a motor according to a deviation Qr to provide torque assist if load torque of the engine 1 is large and a fuel injection quantity Q is smaller than the target fuel injection quantity Qr , and operates the motor-generator 6 as a generator according to the deviation Qr to provide power generation and power storage in a battery 7 if the load torque of the engine 1 is small and the fuel injection quantity Q is larger than the target fuel injection quantity Qr , so that the engine 1 is controlled for the optimal operating state.
