A process for the selective liquid- phase hydrogenation of a, b-unsaturated carbonyl compounds of the formula where R1 is hydrogen or an olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbyl group and R2, R3 and R4 independently of one another, are hydrogen or a C1-to C4-alkyl group, to saturated carbonyl compounds of the formula using hydrogen in the presence of a pulverulent palladium and/or rhodium catalyst and in the presence of an organic base, which comprises carrying out the hydrogenation in a packed bubble column reactor with product recycling and circulating hydrogen gas. 1865 כ' באלול התשס" ג - September 17, 2003
