Fluid treatment element comprises (a) a housing having fluid supplied to an inlet, an outlet for the treated fluid and an element which incorporates porous semi-permeable membranes around a hollow chamber (2) whose open end is directed towards the outlet; (b) a continual passage is formed by the element, between the inlet and the outlet ; (c) a primary current formed from the fluid under treatment (4) flows around the element, a part of this primary flow forms a secondary flow (5) through the porous membrane wall which then collects in the hollow chamber (2) and leaves the treatment element to again join the primary flow (4) within the housing.
