For most data communication systems a checksum is appended to individual data packets to detect the presence of transmission errors. At high received data error rates the checksum performance regarding undetected errors is degraded and so, to maintain a guaranteed performance level, the checksum size has to be increased, reducing the overall data throughput efficiency. The present invention concerns an improved method of data packet error detection which is based on deriving data quality information from thereceived data packet itself, enabling the use of a short checksum to meet the required performance under all error rate conditions. In operation of the method, the resultant data integrity and throughput efficiency are improved.
