PURPOSE: A method and apparatus for determining maximum read bias current and maximum write current of a merging type read/write head of a disk according to a write current and measured read resistance are provided to solve a problem in the stability of read mechanism caused by effect of write mechanism. CONSTITUTION: A controller(1000) for controlling read mechanism and write mechanism included in a read/write head of a disk drive is built in the disk drive. The controller has a computer(1100) for accessing a memory(1120) including a program system(1600) having at least two program steps, and a means(1300) for allowing the computer to measure the resistance of the read mechanism. The program system includes a step of measuring the read resistance of the read mechanism, a step of obtaining a write current set value used for the write mechanism, and a step of determining maximum read current for the read mechanism and maximum write current for the write mechanism on the basis of the measured read resistance and write current set value.
